In the presence of her Excellency, Mrs. Asma Al-Asad, the second National Human Development Report 2005 (NHDR) was launched by the State Planning Commission (SPC) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
The NHDR, entitled “Education and Human Development Towards better Efficiency” brings to light one of the major issues is facing today, i.e. reforming the education system and preparing it for market-led economy, knowledge-based society, good governance, human rights and the rule of law. This requires the formation of students of tomorrow with critical minds and problem solving capabilities with a global vision.
The report identifies the clear malfunctions in the internal and external efficiency in the Syrian education system and the weak relationship with labor market requirements. Thus, it calls for education within a broader perspective for economic, social and political reform.
The report also considers gender issues and looks at the question of equity and aquality for education opportunities and poverty reduction
